How We Will Make a Difference

The health care system is complex, as are the policies and politics that would improve it. But one simple truth is that strong leadership is a vital ingredient for real reform, and this is why Better Health Care Together’s theory of change centers around leadership. Better Health Care Together’s membership comprises the presidents and CEOs of leading companies, labor organizations, and civil society organizations. Its method is for these leaders to challenge public leaders to act on common sense reform principles with a clear deadline – i.e., by 2012. To push for this outcome, the coalition will:

  1. Be a catalyst for business, labor, and policy leaders committed to reform by 2012
  • Expand the roster of those who endorse the common sense reform principles
  • Convene coalition members regularly to discuss ideas and commit to action
  1. Enlist public leaders at all levels to support the coalition’s common sense principles
  • Win support for the principles from governors, other state and local officials, and Congress
  • Encourage state and local resolutions in support of the principles
  • Ensure that the next President and Congress make systemic health reform a top priority
  1. Take the steps that business, labor, and policy leaders can take now to improve health care outcomes leading up to 2012
  • Improve the health of our own employees by encouraging healthy behaviors
  • Seek efficiency and quality in our own health care purchasing decisions

  1. Inform broad swaths of the American public about the need for health reform by 2012
  • Use innovative education and awareness campaigns to articulate the case to employees, customers, and communities that the status quo is unacceptable
  • Convey the importance of the common sense reform principles

  1. Demonstrate the strength of the support for the common sense reform principles
  • Document the private sector leaders and public leaders who support the principles
  • Use the media, Internet, and other communications tools to broaden the base of support

Our theory of change  excludes activities that advocate for a particular health reform plan. Rather, Better Health Care Together will focus more on promoting the common sense reform principles and impressing upon public leaders the need to realize them by 2012.
